Rumors about the next Nissan GT-R featuring a hybrid powertrain are nothing new. Considering Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn’s latest commitments to electric vehicle technology, an alternative fuel GT-R appeared to be more and more likely. But recently, Kazutoshi Mizuno, the GT-R’s chief engineer, confirmed that an alternative powertrain will be incorporated into the next GT-R to help it meet future emissions and fuel economy standards.
Hybrid powertrains have already been confirmed for upcoming sports cars from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and even Ferrari, so confirmation of this isn’t a complete surprise. Luckily, regardless of what type of alternative fuel powertrain is ultimately chosen, Nissan’s new EVs like the upcoming Leaf will provide somewhat of a buffer in terms of keeping overall fleet-wide fuel economy down.
While the next-generation Nissan GT-R is still a ways off, there’s still plenty of life left in the current model. Just this week the 2012 GT-R was spotted and it hinted at all-new front and rear fascias.
