Nissan has just completed its $118 million expansion and retooling of the automaker’s Canton, Mississippi. This plant will now begin production trials of the the all-new NV, Nissan’s first entry into the commercial vehicle segment in the U.S.

The changes at the plant have been taking place over the past 12 months and included modifying 79,200 square feet of existing body assembly space for the new NV van. Additionally, retooling was also performed in the facility’s 59,000 square foot paint shop and an all-new assembly line was also added.

The all-new 2011 Nissan NV was unveiled earlier this month at the NTEA Work Truck Show in St Louis. It is slated to go on sale this fall.

“Preparing the plant to launch a new product in a new segment is a challenge our employees have met head-on,” said Dan Bednarzyk, vice president, Manufacturing – Canton. “We are excited about this opportunity to deliver a high quality, reliable, and innovative product to the marketplace.”

Nissan’s Canton plant has earned a reputation for quality and has even helped Nissan become a 2010 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year according to the EPA. In addition to the NV, the plant currently produces the popular Nissan Altima.
