The new year got off to a bumpy start for Toyota, as a recent string of recalls have put the brand’s legendary quality into question. But January wasn’t all bad, as Nissan reported gains of 16% in the first month of 2010.
With many of Toyota’s most popular models off limits to potential car buyers, Nissan seems to have reaped some of the benefits: Nissan Altima sales increased 31.8 percent, Frontier sales were up 22 percent, Maxima sales were up 51.8 percent, and Armada sales increased 97.8 percent. These double digit increases are compared with this month a year ago.
Although one of Nissan’s major competitors is largely out of commission, the boost in sales could be attributed to growth seen industry wide as the economy begins to recover. Ford is another automaker witnessing double digit growth as they launch all-new models and incentives to maintain the current upswing in sales momentum.
For dealer groups such as Toyota Boston and Nissan Boston where the group has both, this can be an issue.
Nissan’s luxury Infiniti brand has also seen positive results in January, with G Coupe sales up 20.3 percent and QX56 sales up 180.2 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
With 2010 starting of well for Nissan, it only seems that this trend will continue as Nissan branching out into commercial vehicles as well as launching its first all-electric vehicle in the US.
