New Nissan LEAF Plant Prepares For Growth

by Nissan in the News on June 11, 2010

Nissan LEAF Plant Smyrna, TN image

It was a ground-breaking story in more ways than one: Representatives from Nissan, as well as state and local dignitaries, were on hand recently in Smyrna, Tenn., to celebrate the start of construction for a unique new facility: a plant that will build the advanced lithium-ion batteries needed to power the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle. Combined with the nearby assembly line that will produce the car itself, the new manufacturing site will help bring up to 1,300 new jobs to the Smyrna area—and usher in a whole new era of driving.

That’s because the Leaf is a whole new kind of car. With a 24kWh battery pack under the floor—to allow for optimum passenger and cargo space—the Leaf will offer up to 100 miles of all-electric, no-gasoline-needed driving, at speeds of up to 90 mph. That kind of real-world practicality is a hallmark of Nissan’s zero-emissions vehicle, and it’s something that also shows up in the car’s charging capabilities. [click to continue…]

Nissan CEO: Go Big Or Go Away

by Nissan in the News on May 26, 2010

Renault Nissan and Daimler Alliance image

If you ask Nissan CEO Carols Ghosn, size does matter. At an event yesterday at the Detroit Economic Club, the chief executive says that survival in the industry at the moment boils down to size. With rising costs abound, an automaker must be big enough to compete everywhere and in every segment.

One of the areas where automakers must “go big” in is technology. Ghosn stressed that every brand must be capable of developing gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric-vehicle technology all concurrently in order to remain competitive. No brand can predict the future and determine which one technology will reign supreme, making it crucial for automakers to be involved in all areas. [click to continue…]

Nissan Sees Pricing Challenges In EV Market

by Nissan in the News on May 19, 2010

2010 Nissan Leaf image

Although pricing for the upcoming Nissan Leaf remains competitive, Nissan fears that the price point will eventually change. Currently, government incentives help bring the cost of the vehicle down, but there’s no guarantee that those sales subsidies will be offered indefinitely.

Many of the current subsidies have an expiration date, after which time the consumer would be left to pay the full price of the vehicle. The new Leaf is priced from $32,780 in the U.S., but with federal tax credit that price would be reduced to $25,580. [click to continue…]

Rumor: 2012 Nissan GT-R To Offer More Than 500HP

Nissan GT-R image

When the Nissan GT-R was launched, it was able to keep pace with the Porsche 911 Turbo. Now it seems that Nissan intends to maintain that claim.

Like the recently updated 911 Turbo, the 2012 GT-R is likely to receive updated brakes, suspension, and exterior modifications for improved aerodynamics. But perhaps the biggest change will be under the hood, as the GT-R’s 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 may soon provide well over 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. [click to continue…]
