Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk isn’t exactly smitten with the new Nissan Leaf. As the car heads to showrooms, it appears he’s going on the offensive.

On a recent conference call with investors, he took the opportunity to discuss the lithium-ion battery found in the Nissan Leaf, and referred to the battery pack as a “much more primitive level of technology” than even Tesla’s first prototype. He also claimed that the technology’s performance will be influenced significantly by extreme temperatures.

While Musk can claim that the technology isn’t his cup of tea, Nissan remains extremely confident in the ability of its battery pack. Although it isn’t as complex as the system found in a Tesla, Nissan supports its battery so strongly that it is even backed by a an 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Despite harsh words for Nissan’s upcoming EV, few doubt the Leaf’s promise. Nissan has already received thousands of pre-orders and some predict that demand will be so high that Nissan will have difficulty keeping up. Stay tuned as Nissan’s EV will roll out  later this year.
